Chronic kidney disease (CKD), also known as chronic renal disease, is a progressive loss in renal function over a period of months or years. The symptoms of worsening kidney function are unspecific, and might include feeling generally unwell and experiencing areduced appetite. Often, chronic kidney disease is diagnosed as a result of screening of people known to be at risk of kidney problems, such as those with high blood pressure or diabetes and those with a blood relative with chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease may also be identified when it leads to one of its recognized complications, such as cardiovascular disease, anemia or pericarditis.

Diet always plays an important role in the recovery from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Well then, what to eat when you suffer from CKD?

protein: Protein is the necessary substances of our body, which can help to maintain our normal activities. In spite of this, sufferers from CKD should limit the intake of protein in their daily diet because excessive protein will increase the burden of our kidneys, leading to the aggravation of CKD. Furthermore, about sixty percent of protein ingested by people with CKD should be high-quality protein which mainly exists in lean meat, fish, dairy products, beef and egg white.

Sodium: CKD and sodium are always appearing together. Usually, the higher the salt intake is, the higher the possibility of deteriorating CKD, high blood pressure and heart disease. Therefore, foods which are rich in sodium should be restricted. The common foods which contain large amount of sodium include canned food, pickles, smoked meat, some frozen foods, processed cheese, packed chips, junk food and cracker.

Phosphorus: Accumulation of excessive phosphorus in our body will cause rapid progress of CKD, bone disease and heart disease; therefore, having a proper intake of phosphorus in the daily diet is also essential for sufferers from CKD. Usually, 3.5 to 5.5mg/dL is the target range for CKD dialysis patients and 2.7 to 4.6mg/dL for people with CKD non-dialysis. Thereby, dairy products, nuts, beans and some vegetables like cocoa, cold drinks and beer must be avoided.

Potassium: Most of the potassium is discharged through our kidneys; however, for people with CKD, their kidneys are damaged and can not remove the excessive potassium, so controlling the intake of potassium is very important. The followings are the common foods which should be avoided because of the high level of potassium in them: milk, yogurt, avocado, kiwis, oranges, papayas, banana, cantaloupe, legumes-nuts, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, spinach and fellow leafy vegetables, sweet potato, animal protein, winter vegetable juices and squash.
